WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY (ESWT)
Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a treatment usually offered when chronic symptoms of pain and dysfunction have persisted for at least 3-6 months and have not responded to conservative treatments, such as physical therapy, activity modification, ice therapy, painkillers and / or steroid injection.
ESWT is a technology that uses shockwaves to treat chronic painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Extracorporeal means outside the body. A shock wave is an intense but short energy wave travelling faster than the speed of sound which is passed through the skin at the injured area and works by stimulating certain components within the body which accelerates the healing process. It is a very low-risk procedure.
